More Than Names Campaign

Fall 2015

WCCO More Than Names Campaign

Throughout the late summer and fall of 2015, MMAF partnered with WCCO TV for the More Than Names Campaign to recognize and support our military members and their families. Minnesotans all across the state had the chance to sign a 102-by-76 foot flag, a flag large enough for more than 150,000 names. Everyone who signed the flag is part of the world record for most signatures on a flag. The goal of the campaign was to break a world record while showing gratitude to veterans of all generations.

Panels of the More Than Names Flag were brought to events for MMAF, including the Twin Cities River Rats show, the Lake Ride for Veterans, and Say Thanks Day. At those three events alone, over 2,500 signatures were added to the flag. At the State Fair, WCCO asked attendees to sign panels at their booth, resulting in nearly 100,000 signatures throughout the eleven days.

But saying “Thank You” was only half of the campaign, the other half was support. On two separate occasions, WCCO hosted phone during their newscasts to raise funds for MMAF. As part of the phone banks, WCCO shared the stories of a number of MMAF grant recipients. One was Marcia Hergott, whose son was the first Minnesotan killed in Iraq. Another was Staff Sergeant Scott Adams, who was severely burned in an IED explosion. The grant recipients shared their stories to illustrate the importance of MMAF and why the organization is a continued necessity for veterans and their families.

Panels of the More than Names Flag were sewn together and unveiled at the Minnesota Wild game on Tuesday, November 10. Thank you to everyone who signed the flag to show their support and to the many volunteers who made the campaign a huge success!
