Heroes among us. There’s no better way to describe our Minnesota service members. Even though they may consider themselves ordinary people, many—including the speakers we’re honoring—bravely put themselves in harm’s way, proudly serving our nation. Their stories of service, sacrifice and duty to country will move you.

Retired Air Force Reserve Lieutenant Colonel Carol Freerks served as a Flight Nurse/Medical Crew Director and Flight Clinical Coordinator with the 934th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron (AES) from 1990–2011. Lt. Col. Freerks deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom where she managed medical crews and supplies and served on medical missions providing in-flight patient care. She never lost a patient. She also served as the 934th AES Interim Squad Commander in 2009 and in 2011. Lt. Col. Freerks received her nursing degree from the University of Minnesota in 1981 and has been an employee of St. Paul Children’s Hospital since 1982, where she has continued in the Neonatal ICU since military retirement.

Retired Army Sergeant Thomas Block joined the Army in February 2010, completed the Ranger Assessment and Selection Program as an Honor Graduate later that year and was assigned to the 3rd Ranger Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment. On October 6, 2013, while on patrol in search of insurgents planning suicide attacks, Sgt. Block was severely injured and blown 35 feet into a minefield after a suicide bomber detonated the bomb strapped to her body. Extensive surgeries followed, and Sgt. Block was fitted with a prosthetic right eye, which boldly bears Captain America’s shield. Named the 2014 Army Times Soldier of the Year, Block has remained an inspiration not only to fellow Rangers but throughout the Army by speaking at leadership courses about resilience and perseverance. Sgt. Block was medically retired in 2014 and currently works for the Department of Homeland Security HERO Corps in Boston, combating child predators.

Please join these Minnesota natives for a memorable night in support of our service members.

To date, MMAF has provided more than $10.5 million in grants to more than 16,500 Minnesota service members. With your support at this event, we can continue making a difference in the lives of our Minnesota troops and their families.

MMAF grant recipients, along with a guest, are invited to attend the dinner free of charge. Because the dinner is our main fundraising event, free seating is limited and RSVPs will be taken on a first come, first serve basis.

Each grant recipient and their guest will be seated at one of the tables purchased by companies and individuals who support MMAF. This approach encourages conversation between grant recipients and MMAF supporters and allows for your first-hand military experiences to be shared amongst those at each table.

Grant recipients interested in attending the dinner can do so by emailing MMAF
